Garlic…..It goes in so many dishes but do you really know how to peel and chop garlic?
A little background info on it before I tell you how. It’s actually a member of the lily family., Leeks, shallots, onions, and chives are also related.
Here’s a simple guide to peeling and chopping garlic:
- Choose a head of garlic that is uniform in color and has firm, unblemished cloves.
- Remove one or more cloves from the head and slice off the woody ends of each clove with a knife.
- Peel back the layers of papery skin with your fingers until the clove is exposed. You can also place each clove on a cutting board, place the flat side of a chef’s knife on top, and then press down to crush the clove or hit the knife carefully and gently with your closed fist. In most cases, the skin will come right off.
- To chop: Using a chef’s knife, cut the cloves in half lengthwise. Make several cuts the length of each half with the tip of the knife, then cut the pieces crosswise into the desired size. (You could also just crush the garlic by smashing it with the flat side of the blade as in the tip above or use a garlic press.)
